A Clean Bill of Wealth

Tempo Interaktif reports that steps are underway to tighten controls on money changers in Bali to improve service and reduce the possibility of money laundering.

Among the steps underway are the issuance of an official logo for display by licensed money changers and a set of know you client procedures requiring those seeking exchange services to prove their true identity.

The Vice Chairman of the Center for the Reporting and Analysis of Financial Transactions (PPATK), Susno Suaji, said, "we hope to get a report on every suspicious financial transaction that takes place."

Suaji said that beginning in 2008 the PPATK will take stern steps against money changers who fail to report their financial transactions including imposing punishments of up to 5 years in prison for transactions traced to money laundering activities.

The Chairman of the Bali Money Changers Association, Made Suparta Karang, said he is prepared to support any steps to control money-laundering. There are currently 494 registered money changers in Bali with still many more illegal money changers operating across the Island.

Bali traditional music

Finally, a phenomenon we cannot ignore is the economic advantages resulting from the harmonic integration of the arts and tourism. Cultural conservation is often seen as burden for many people sof the world these days, but in Bali, with the presence of tourism and its sponsorship of the culture is general and the arts in particular, both the arts and their preservation are thus guaranteed. As a commodity of tourism, the arts play a large part in economy of the island, and of the nation as a whole, enabling artists to improve their standards of living above the ranks of the lower classes, farmers etc. This means that people are unlikely to think twice before choosing the arts as profession, rather than simply as a hobby, and therefore the skills and talent necessary for artistic endeavor are maintained from generation to generation . The skills of the carver or dancer are reared carefully throughout the society because these abilities serve as a source of prosperity for those ready to master them.

These realities show that between tourism and the art in Bali there is a dynamic interaction which so mutually beneficial. This tends to support the discovery made by American Anthropologist McKean more than two decade ago, that although great social and economic changes were taking place in Bali, this was all taking place in Bali, this was all taking place - hand in hand - with the conservation of traditional culture.

Tourism it seems, has actually strengthened the process of conservation, reformation and revitalization of various tradition including art.

Tourism has selectively reinforced traditional culture in Bali through a process which has been termed "culture involution '. Cultural influence from abroad is a given and no culture can isolate itself from foreign influence. Interestingly in Bali as anthropologist Stephen Langsing has noted, this influence has an additive rather than a subtractive effect. The influence enriches and develops rather than changes and destroys. This kind of influence is swallowed whole (rather than in spoonfuls through a process of Balinisation) and regurgitated as a purely Balinese product. This agrees with the many theories which posit Balinese culture as having an intense vitality and adaptability when faced with startlingly new conditions. History has already shown that Balinese culture can ride many a storm without losing its balance and at the same time give birth to new and exciting cultural creation. The history of the Balinese arts is a syncretistic one

showing a staying power and adaptability in the face of many changes. Several factors tend it support these positive influences of tourism. These have their roots in traditional Balinese culture which is based on its Hindu faith, whose concept of Rwa-Bhineda (mentioned later) underlines so many aspects of life. There is also the doctrine desa, kala, patra ( time, place, situation), which praises variety in accordance with the place, time and objective situation of different environments

How Ringtones Work

A cell-phone screen

Like computers, cars and PDAs, cell phones started out as purely functional pieces of technology, but quickly evolved plenty of fun frills to keep their users entertained. Today's phones have built-in video games, specialized background pictures, switchable faceplates and, of course, customizable ringtones.

A ringtone version of your new favorite song does serve some purpose, of course -- it lets you distinguish your own phone's ring from other phones ringing around you -- but more than anything else, it's a chance to add personality to technology.

In this article, we'll see what ringtones are all about and we'll find out how you can add new tunes to your phone (if it's compatible). As we'll see, it's incredibly easy to find and add a song you like and load it up.

Ringtone Basics
If you've read How Cell Phones Work, you know the central "brain" of a cell phone is a small microprocessor. Just like the microprocessor in a computer, this unit controls everything that the cell phone does, working from information stored in the phone's memory.

At its core, a ringtone is simply a computer program stored on the cell phone's memory chip. This program's sole purpose in life is to tell the microprocessor what the phone's speaker system should do when the phone's receiver picks up an incoming call.

Ringtone-capable phones already have a range of notes stored in memory (that is, they include information on speaker vibration frequencies that will produce particular tones). The ringtone program only has to tell the microprocessor which of these notes to play, in which order and at what speed. By adjusting these variables, the microprocessor can play an infinite number of ringtones.

The clearest example of this sort of programming language is the Ringing Tone Text Transfer Language (RTTTL) format, developed by Nokia. Here's a typical section of RTTTL code, with a description of what each bit means.

The Good Ringtones

Electricity
220V , 50 Cycle and the plugs are dual round prongs of the European variety.( 110V available in most hotel bathrooms )
Adapters also available at some hotels OR can be purchased at Matahari's ( supermarket ) for around 35,000 Rp.

Children
Most Hotels will not charge for your child if they are in the same room using an existing bed. This is where "suite's "come in handy and are at times the same price as a "deluxe room". Check and see if the hotel has a childrens program. They are very good and can be used to get the kids out of your hair for an afternoon. Most family hotels have baby sitting services.

Hair Dryer
Most Hotels will have a hairdryer on Request from "house keeping" If they dont have one in the room already. If it's not in the bathroom , check one of the dressing table drawers.

*Note :
99% of Hotels quote in $US and will take credit cards ( some hotels charge 3% for this service )

Direct Email
Below are Lists of booking agents , followed by Hotels and their direct email addresses , so you can negotiate your own rate. This list will grow as I find hotel email addresses , however , getting their direct email address is a little hard as most booking agents prefer NOT to give you access directly to a hotel for obvious reasons. I stress that I make NO monies from this list and its my Love of Bali and its people that I have provided this information.

Disclaimer :
By Placing these links , I am not endorsing any Hotel OR Booking Agency , I am just making links to the information that I have found by surfing the net myself. I chose a Hotel by its facilities and location and then surfed the net for the best offer. I found that a picture helped my decision making.

Newest Airline Trend: Sleeping at the Airport

At one time, sleeping at an airport overnight was uncommon except in cases of young travelers short on cash. That is all changing, however, as it begins to affect professional travelers.
“And a big reason is that airlines outside Europe are no longer as generous with hotel vouchers as they once were,” said the AP.
Randy Petersen, editor of the online magazine InsideFlyer and the frequent flier Web site FlyerTalk.com, attributes the change to “belt-tightening by airlines over the last 18 months, and more so this year.”
“They have to look at everything they spend a penny on,” Petersen said. Because flights are fuller, he added, they’re not just dealing with a few passengers.
“If they’re charging for extra bags, food and water, then the flip side is the airlines are going to go out of their way to minimize expenses on one side, while maximizing on the other,” added Bob Harrell, an airline consultant.

The phenomenon has had various impacts:
- It has inspired at least one recent novel, “Dear American Airlines.” The author, Jonathan Miles, said he had been spurred to write the book after an unscheduled overnight stay at O’Hare International Airport, in Chicago.
- An unscheduled overnight stay at a German airport inspired one business traveler, Frank Giotto, the president of Fiber Instrument Sales in Oriskany, New York, to create the Mini Motel, a one-person tent complete with, air mattress, reading light, alarm clock and pillow (which he sells for $39.95).
- There is even a Web site, the Budget Traveler’s Guide to Sleeping in Airports at www.sleepinginairports.com, which lists the best and worst airports to spend the night. Generally speaking, under European Union rules that came into effect in 2005, delays of more than five hours entitle a passenger to a hotel room, if an overnight stay is required. However, there can still be exceptions. For those who do get stuck, advice from seasoned travelers boils down to this: Bring or buy a snack and water before airport shops close. Also, bring reading material or music and something soft to lie down on or rest your head against. Keep hotel phone numbers or certain Web site addresses handy. (BTN/David Wilkening/*)
